Youth Scooping!

Start the New Year right by coming to Sunday School!  Our Senior Highers (grades 10 - 12) are taking an aerial view of the Pauline Epistles!  One Pauline letter each Sunday morning!  The Junior High (grades 7 - 9) are likewise studying God's Word!  Come on out at 9:30am!  Get something healthy in your belly - an Apple?  Just ask Dan, Dan, Dan, or Daniel what our snacks consist of!  ;-)  Then, get into sharing and praying and learning from God's Word together!

Check out the Youth Scoop for information throughout the coming months!    The Junior High Retreat will be held at NorthBay Adventure Camp in North East, MD from February 19 - 21, 2010.  More information on this retreat is available in the youth room!

Active and challenging
Our youth are very important to us and we provide an active program to encourage them in their spiritual lives and church involvement. In addition to regularly scheduled meetings, we also provide a variety of outings, retreats, and joint activities with other church youth groups. We also challenge our young people through exposure to local and cross-cultural missions experiences, including trips outside the USA. Missions experiences include building projects, evangelism and teaching Vacation Bible School (VBS). Past missions destinations have included: Monclova, Mexico; Annotto Bay, Jamaica; DC/LA94, Washington; Jungle Aviation and Radio Service/Jungle Jump-Off , Waxhaw, NC; inner-city Philadelphia housing communities (FilaSIDE)/Jesus Children Fellowship; Siparia, Trinidad; Aracatuba, Brazil ; several times in Appalachia (West VA); Juarez, Mexico; Toronto, Canada; and Gulfport, MS. A number of our teens served on teens in Gloucester, MA and Guatemala this past summer.

Growth and service

Activities are planned with the purpose of reaching out with the Gospel of Christ (John 3:16), encouraging the believer's growth through the study of God's Word (Hebrews 4:12), and equipping students to exercise their faith unto maturity (Philippians 1:6) by encouraging servant leadership (Philippians 2). The students normally meet in two groups: Jr High (grades 7-9); and Sr High (grades 10-12). Our teens serve the church body through various ministries including Teen Assistants through our Pioneer Club Program (K-6); assisting in child care; as well as carrying out duties as ushers. In addition, teens are selected to serve as Teen Servant Leaders (TSL, see link) alongside our adult youth staff to help in planning events and being a voice for their peers.

Meeting opportunities
Our regularly scheduled meeting opportunities include our Sunday School, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. and Youth Groups on Sunday evenings, 6:00 PM - 7:30PM. Youth activities can be verified anytime through the "Youth Scoop", calling the church, or emailing us at gbcoffice@comcast.net.

Missions Each Sunday!

Come on any Sunday morning and learn about Mestawot!  Through a simple offering a number of our teenagers give what they can and pray each Sunday morning for Miss Mestawot Behailu! Mestawot has been supported by respective Teen Sunday School Classes since around 1989! She lives in Ethiopia and our donation is given through Compassion International. The following is an excerpt from a thank-you we just received from Dr. Mekonen Kebede, chairperson of the elder board for the local church where the child development center is run in partnership with C.I. and where Mestawot is ministered to as our Compassion-sponsored child: “The Aim is to rescue children from poverty in Jesus’ Name. Currently 237 children are assisted in the center. The area (where we live) is known as one of the slums in Addis Ababa.  Income of the people is from hand to mouth. Most people in our area are daily laborers. The second major livelihood is petty trading. The rest live on begging. Moreover, more than half of the population is illiterate. Because of the prevalent skin diseases (such as leprosy), most families are secluded from social activities.  Due to the increasing population, lack of employment opportunities and economic inflation, impoverished people are highly affected. Children living in the area are exposed to hunger, labor exploitation, bad habits, rape and sexual diseases. “ Our simply monetary gifts and prayers are sought and applied in four areas: Spiritual, economic, social, and physical. “The center provides support for Mestawot including food, school, fee, educational materials, clothing, health training and vocational training. Mestawot is one of 125 children attending school in the center. She is growing up in a safe environment and hearing the Word of God. The center also provides counseling support and Sunday School for children. There are about 40 Sunday School teachers and 46 children’s counselors who are trained and serve voluntarily.” Simply by coming to Sunday School, GBC teens are making an impact in one person’s life in Ethiopia! Come by the youth room sometime and see her picture on our bulletin board!
